George Bancroft
The TEXAS TUNESMITH
In the midst of this overgrown music jungle littered
with mediocre hydroponic music and lyric…there is one
“Lone” music scene rich in acoustic soil laid thick and
hearty, which continuously produces the freshest most
musically nourished songwriters in the bunch. These
songriders are more organically grown and wear their
weathered scars with a sense of humor and the wit of
wisdom. It is warriors like these that bring you the
true uncensored music of life.
Nobody knows this better than George Bancroft. George
has walked the walk and talked the talk in his own
songwriting aspirations between his many “college tries”
at everything from broadcasting to marketing and
from stock broking to school teaching. “I think I am the
only person I know who went from stock broker to stock
boy just so I could write songs.” George has also had
the endearing pleasure only a true musician
gets when he is pawning off his possessions in the name
of his record. “My first record was made by way of the
bartering system. By the time I was done the guy who
helped me had a nice studio and I was eating off a peach
crate.”
With the release of his latest CD, “One Man One Guitar”,
George has stripped away all the slick Nashville
production and LA pitch corrections and computerized
harmonies. What the listener is left with
are just the raw songs – the haunting melodies and
lyrics that anyone can relate to. As he sings the songs
of his life, we are carried along for the ride.
It is George’s natural understanding of song and the
left-of-center mentality of the true tunesmith that
makes one of his performances such a memorable
experience. “Texas is a migratory state and has always
been
about pioneering music styles. There is no music
bigotry. In terms of the cross-pollination, people learn
to accept all kinds of things and all kinds of music. If
you have a good product you should not apologize
for selling it.”
“I think Nashville takes what Texas creates, smoothes
off all the rough edges and anything that is remotely
offensive, and then serves vanilla pudding to the
country. I’m not knocking what they do. Someone has to
build a Ford, someone has to build a Chevy, but Texas
builds hot rods baby!”
George’s latest record release One Man, One Guitar is

monthly column Tale Behind The Tune in Texas Music Times
Magazine. George lives in Big Spring, Texas with his
beautiful wife Elissa, his two daughters Medina and
Olivia, and Milagro the wonder dog.
